The weather in Northeastern Pennsylvania can be quite unpredictable at times. Nevertheless, certain rules of thumb do exist which, if cautiously followed, will ensure your comfort and preparedness for any type of weather. No matter when you visit Northeastern Pennsylvania, though, don't forget your umbrella, as rainfall is plentiful year-round.

Hazleton is located almost exactly at 76 degrees longitude and 41 degreees latitude, placing it in a relatively temperate zone. Its elevation at almost 1,900 feet above sea level, however, sometimes causes its inhabitants to experience a bit more extreme weather than their counterparts in the nearby Wyoming Valley.

Average summer temperatures range between daytime highs of 80-90 degrees, while overnight lows are commonly between 65-70. The highest temperatures are experienced in the months of July and August.

Fall is perhaps the most beautiful season in the Pocono Mountains, with the fall foliage bursting into brilliant displays of color. Bright hues of red, yellow and orange paint the landcape as far as the eye can see. Daytime temperatures average between 50-65, while overnight temperatures often dip to between 40-45.

Surprisingly, snowfall during the winter months continues to be relatively modest; however, two to three significant snowfalls per year are to be expected. About once every ten years a Nor'easter will cause quite a bit of inconvenience, though very little actual damage. Temperatures usually range between 30-40, rarely going below zero. The wind chill factor, however, can make it feel colder, as winter winds can get gusty at times. The Pocono ski resorts make more snow than Mother Nature provides, ensuring good skiing conditions throughout the season. Those who don't like snow can take consolation in the fact that we don't get anywhere near the amount of snow that our neighbors, such as Buffalo, get.

Finally, spring is a lovely sight to behold as migratory birds such as geese, robins and hawks return and spring flowers such as mountain laurel (Pennsylvania's state flower) begin to blossom. Average temperatures range between 55-65 degrees, though overnight frosts are common. With everything in bloom, though, don't forget to pack your allergy medicine.
